Baroque Pearls, 2022, fiberglass, recycled styrofoam, polyurethane resin & mother of pearl dust, 68 x 70 x 65 cm

The Baroque Pearls are ethereal orbs in the Ponder Peace sculpture garden. Made with powdered mother of pearl dust these gems are nestled into the landscape of moss and rocks. The Baroque Pearls have a transcendental and futuristic quality to them, almost like alien totems; the pearls offset the architectural and figurative nature of the sculpture garden. Their namesake refers to the irregularity of pearls as naturally occurring gems and playfully alludes to the Baroque period in Art History. Perfect in their imperfection, Baroque Pearls are a visual delight in the sculpture garden and a moment of whimsy.

Inspired by the client's comprehensive collection of abstractions by painter David Simpson, Baroque Pearls channel the meditative quality that comes with exploring the impact of refracted and reflected light. Its lustrous surfaces offset the surrounding natural elements, seemingly adding a supernatural geological narrative to this corner of Umbria.

Baroque Pearls is part of Ponder Peace at Isola di Pace a sculpture garden custom built for a private estate in Umbria, Italy. It was created by Isotta Page and co fabricated by Isotta Page and Ulen/Ellen Mohan.
