Artemisia’s stark silhouette greets you from afar. The closing sculpture of Ponder Peace is the crescent moon, the iconic symbol of Greek Goddess Artemisia, who is said to watch over wild animals, hunters and vegetation. Greek Mythological references bookend the Ponder Peace sculpture garden, Artemisia and Medusa become feminine guardians of the landscape.

Artemisia’s silhouette is sickle-like in the warm light of day and silver moonlight. With two distinct finishes on the front and back, the sculpture aesthetically combines wood with cast bronze. Artemisia’s curvature reflects the curved arches of the wine tasting room, fabricated from large styrofoam forms which were recycled and utilized as the base material for all pieces in the sculpture garden.

This inverse dialogue of sculpture referencing architecture is fittingly the final comment of the Ponder Peace sculpture garden and reiterates the unique narrative made possible by utilizing reclaimed and recycled materials.

Artemisia is part of Ponder Peace at Isola di Pace a sculpture garden custom built for a private estate in Umbria, Italy. It was created by Isotta Page and co fabricated by Isotta Page and Ulen/Ellen Mohan.
